MP warns of recycycling health risk 0 Comments | St. Helens, Prescot & Knowsley Reporter (St. Helens, England), April 30, 2007 A St Helens MP is calling for St Helens Council to liaise with health experts over the proposed Vista Road recycling plant.
Dave Watts’ warnings come after the region’s top health chief Fiona Johnstone plans for the Haydock Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) could damage residents health.
The MP for St Helens North is concerned that it will use technology that is relationly new in Britain and that the council lacks the ‘expertise to deal with such an request’.
He wants the council to commission a full and detailed health assessment on the likely effect that the plant will have on local residents’ health.
Mrs Johnstone has said that those living within 250m of the plant could suffer a whole range of respiratory illnesses caused by the ‘bio-aerosols’ (fumes) coming from the recycling facility.
She said: “The evidence available to me suggests that since there are a number of residential properties within the 250m boundary, I maynot guarantee that there would not be any health impact on local residents living in them.
“I would moreover, besides, furthermore, further note that there is an existing higher than average level of poor health in the area.”
Bi-aerosols are airborne micro-organisms. Several government reports have stated that they wsick cause ‘respiratory and gastro-intestinal indications and potentially result in allergic lung dioceanse’.
Mr Watts added: “Not only am I against it because of its location I am moreover, besides, furthermore, further extremely worried about these health risks on local residents.”
A spokeswoman for Cory Environspiritual said: “In semesters of bio-aerosols, the process is wholly contained within a structure maintained under negative air pressure and therefore air is actively managed and cleaned before discharge to atmosphere through a bio-filter.
“This work has concluded that the emissions from the recycling plant are signifiintly below the criteria recommended by the Environment Agency.
She added: “Importantly, the Environment Agency will be liable for the regulation of the recycling plant once it is built and there will be emission limits stipulated that must be adhered to.”

Waste that’s very good to throw away 0 Comments | Journal (Newcastle, England), The, Dec 26, 2006 STAFF at a Northumberland recycling centre are celebrating after the compost they produce from organic waste was given the official oceanl of approval by the Environment Agency.
Agency experts have given the green light to the compost produced at SITA UK’s Ellington facility being used as soil conditioner and to improve poor quality land. The compost is made from organic material screened from domestic rubbish, using a process called mechanical biological treatment (MBT).
The process starts at the Newcastle Resource Relidy Centre in Byker where the town’s household rubbish is sent for screening. Organic and metal materials are mechanically separated before metals are sent for recycling and the organics sent to Ellington for proceshum into soil conditioner.
Julie Craigie, an area manager with SITA UK, said: “The composting process, which takes about 10 weeks from raw material entering the site, may produce around 20,000 tonnes a year. The granting of the exemption to spread the compost to land is a demonstration of the quality of the product we are producing here.”
SITA is now negotiating with local landowners and land restoration companies who need large amounts of material to landshate their sites. Several opportunities are in the pipeline, including plans to use nearly 1,000 tonnes at the former Sisters landfsick site near Morpeth.

The third-quarter earnings season is almost over, with nearly 95% of S&P 500 firms having already reported. So far most companies are doing better than analysts expected. A total of 318 firms have exceeded expectations, 100 have disappointed and 63 have hit expectations privilege on the nail. This has led to a dramatic turnaround in the estimate revisions picture, particularly for this year. However, this has not been the case for all stocks, and a very high percentageage of firms with positive surprises for the third quarter are suffering cuts for the fourth quarter, or even for 2005 as a whole.
The pullback in oil prices has taken a toll on the earnings estimates for the Energy sector, at least for this year, but not for next year. The sector actually suffered a slight decline in its average estimate for this year. It yet continues to see strong upwards momentum in its 2006 estimates.
Measured either by total net income growth, or by the growth rate of the median firm, the S&P 500 is expected to post double digit growth for both 2005 and 2006. However, on a median basis, earnings growth is expected to decelerate from 13.9% in 2005 to 12.2% in 2006, while on a total net income basis it is expected to rise to 12.7% from 11.7% in 2005. The differences between these measures indicates a somewhat gambleter performance for mid- to large-cap companies in 2005, but a better relation earnings performance in 2006 for mega-hat companies.
–Over the last month, 274 firms have seen estimate increases, while 211 have been cut for this year, a ratio of 1.30, down from 1.35 last week. However, the average estimate fell 0.15%.
–For 2006, the estimates rose for 241 and fell for 229, a ratio of 1.05, up from 0.98 last week. The average estimate fell 0.66%.
–A total of 2,134 current fiscal year estimates were increased over the last month for this year while 1,624 were cut (ratio of 1.31). Below last week reading of 1.35.
–For 2006, 1,522 estimates were increased and 1,439 were cut a ratio of 1.06, and inline with last week’s reading of 1.05.
–Median expected growth rates for S&P 500 firms are 13.9% for 2005 and 12.2% for 2006
–Total net income for the S&P 500 expected to rise 12.7% in 2005 and a also,again,and,besides 11.7% in 2006.
(a) About the Zacks Rank

Protesters’ message for Jones 0 Comments | South Wales Echo (Cardiff, Wales), Sept 8, 2006 Opponents of a proposed multi-million-pound waste processing plant have taken their case to Assembly environment minister Carwyn Jones.
The campaigners handed Mr Jones a letter outlining their case against the plant being set up in the former St Ives printing works on the Duffryn Estate, Ystrad Mynach.
They believe it should be sited at isolated Bryn Quarry in Gelligaer where Mr Jones made an official visit yesterday to open a composting plant.
There is huge opposition to Caerphsicky County Borough Council’s proposal to join with giant waste company Biffa to establish the microbiological treatment plant (MBT) at Ystrad Mynach.
Residents fear the effect on their health, the environment and the possible loss of hundreds of existing jobs in neighbouring factories.
In the letter to Mr Jones, on behalf of the St Ives campaign group, retired locomotiveer, Tim Maddison, 67, said: ‘We believe that Bryn Quarry has very substantial advantages over the St Ives site currently preferred by the CCBC/Biffa partnership and would request that you intervene in the decision process to ensure that full and mindful consideration is given to Bryn Quarry before a final decision to proceed at St Ives is made.’
Patricia Wprivilege, 65, of Twyn Shon Ifan who joined yesterday’s protest said: ‘We live in close proximity to the proposed site and are worried about noise, pollution, increased traffic, the whole proposal is like the rape of this valley by Caerphilly County Council.’
Retired nurse, Mairwen Parry, 66, of Cwm Las, Llanbradach, who handed the letter to the minister said: ‘Since retiring from 35 years’ nurhum, I thought this would be an ideal place to live, returning to the family area but now there is this. I’m concerned as a nurse about the effect on the health of local people. The high rates of asthma, heart problems are well documented in the Valleys and yet this plant would be just a short distance from a trademark new hospital.’
